Nothing is done. Everything in the world remains to be done or done over. The greatest picture is not yet painted, the greatest play isn't written, the greatest poem is unsung. There isn't in all the world a perfect railroad, nor a good government, nor a sound law. Physics, mathematics, and especially the most advanced and exact of the sciences are being fundamentally revised. . . Psychology, economics, and sociology are awaiting a Darwin, whose work in turn is awaiting an Einstein.
This publication focuses on the concepts and visions of FIU Architecture students for the subsidized artist and workforce housing in the City of Miami Beach. The students visited two designated sites with Maria Ruiz, Community Development Director for the City of Miami Beach to discuss the vision for the locations and overall strategies for making Miami Beach more affordable.
Summer 2018 - ARC+
Comprehensive Design Studio - The development of an architectural project with an emphasis on comprehensive building design: advanced site development, spatial relationships between interior and exterior landscape, zoning and code analysis, programming, and fully integrated building systems. The study focuses on environmental concerns in building design. Studio work includes a comprehensive set of architectural documents, an articulated model, and architectural details representative of the building's concepts.
“True affordable housing is one that is sustainable, high quality materials and low maintenance. This must all be incorporated into the design by the architectural and engineering team and not depend in the owner or builder to try to piece it together.”
"The consistent guiding value for all who work for a more sustainable housing future should be to make the voices of the most affected people the most elevated and heard."
"I think it is ultimately a question of living up to the standard of being a global city. Increasingly, the most functional global cities have opportunities for people at all ends of the economic spectrum."
“I encourage all stakeholders to look past easy answers and focus on data. What strategies are scientifically shown to provide the most help to the most people? If I’m not trying to help the most people, is my goal really to help?”
“…is the true belief of our CEO and founder that you should be a good citizen of the industry you service. So you could say that Procore.org is based on our founder's vision of being a great company doing great things.”
“Building Sustainable Cities — And A Sustainable Future — Will Need Open Dialogue Among All Branches Of National, Regional And Local Government. And It Will Need The Engagement Of All Stakeholders — Including The Private Sector And Civil Society, And Especially The Poor And Marginalized.” — Ban Ki Moon — Secretary-General Of The United Nations
We are very pleased to share the digital version of our first publication:
We are grateful to the many people who made the ARC+ Buildgreen collaboration possible.
We would like to thank FIU CARTA faculty and administration, the students who participated, and most importantly our founding sponsors:
A special thanks goes out to Henry Rueda, Assistant Professor and Alan Campos, Graduate Assistant for their tireless work in the design of the book.
The book captures our site visits over the course of three semesters and is focused on three specific courses: Materials and Methods of Construction, Integrated Comprehensive Design and Integrated Building Systems.
Students in these courses learn about design and building construction with assignments based on their Studio Projects. The interaction on real construction sites is the perfect platform to meet with developers, contractors, consultants and clients.
It is the space for discussions, questions and collaborations.
