Summer 2018 - ARC+
Comprehensive Design Studio - The development of an architectural project with an emphasis on comprehensive building design: advanced site development, spatial relationships between interior and exterior landscape, zoning and code analysis, programming, and fully integrated building systems. The study focuses on environmental concerns in building design. Studio work includes a comprehensive set of architectural documents, an articulated model, and architectural details representative of the building's concepts.
“Clearly, as in all of South Florida, housing – or rather the lack of affordable housing across the income spectrum – is a major community concern. My job is to leverage what I have to make something better for those looking to live here.”
“Building Sustainable Cities — And A Sustainable Future — Will Need Open Dialogue Among All Branches Of National, Regional And Local Government. And It Will Need The Engagement Of All Stakeholders — Including The Private Sector And Civil Society, And Especially The Poor And Marginalized.” — Ban Ki Moon — Secretary-General Of The United Nations
Although the schedule of a graduate assistant is quite busy we were able to have a sit down with Sandra Mustieles. She shared her experience learning on site while participating in the Buildgreen program.

Conversation & Cocktails @ the MBUS. Thank you to everyone who came out in support of a more sustainable Miami and our ARC+ Community event.
Visit our co-collaborators below:
We would like to thank the cities of Miami Beach and South Miami, along with the Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida, for their collaboration on a series of design studios on affordable housing solutions led by Jason Chandler and the FIU School of Communications, Architecture + the Arts.
ARC+ Community will continue to explore design solutions next semester as we plan to host a series of public policy dialogues with community stakeholders on a host of sustainable socio-economic solutions related to affordable housing.
We are very pleased to share the digital version of our first publication:
“A Moveable Collaboration, Exploring the Space Between Academia and Industry.”
We are grateful to the many people who made the ARC+ Buildgreen collaboration possible.
We would like to thank FIU CARTA faculty and administration, the students who participated, and most importantly our founding sponsors:
A special thanks goes out to Henry Rueda, Assistant Professor and Alan Campos, Graduate Assistant for their tireless work in the design of the book.
The book captures our site visits over the course of three semesters and is focused on three specific courses: Materials and Methods of Construction, Integrated Comprehensive Design and Integrated Building Systems.
Students in these courses learn about design and building construction with assignments based on their Studio Projects. The interaction on real construction sites is the perfect platform to meet with developers, contractors, consultants and clients.
It is the space for discussions, questions and collaborations.
In collaboration with FIU CARTA and OIKOS paints, ARC+ Buildgreen hosted a workshop for FIU students entitled: Color, Light and Texture...Solutions for Projecting an Environmentally Safe Decoration for Interiors.
We would like to thank Vicky Syriopoulou for sharing her knowledge and expertise and the OIKOS commitment to building a more sustainable future.
"Even when the word sustainability was not particularly fashionable for OIKOS it was a fundamental and unwavering condition of our productive processes. For three decades we have been producing color and matter for architecture and we do it by paying maximum attention to the lives of the people that work with us as well as the lives of those who purchase our products."
As part of our ongoing collaboration with FIU CARTA, students and members of AIAS were were joined by Buildworks, BBA Architecture and The Sanberg Nortmann Group of Douglas Elliman on a site visit to the Sofi House. This historic renovation project is now under construction on South Beach.
Joey Woodworth, President of Buildworks, Inc., leads FIU CARTA students on a site visit to the Venetian Causeway on Miami Beach.
